The College of Administration and Economics at the University of Karbala Organizes a Workshop on the Health, Social, and Economic Harms of Smoking

The Department of Business Administration at the College of Administration and Economics, University of Karbala, organized an awareness workshop titled “The Health, Social, and Economic Harms of Smoking” as part of a series of events aimed at promoting health and cultural awareness among students.

The workshop was attended by a distinguished group of professors and students. The lecture was delivered by Professor Dr. Saleh Mahdi Al-Hasnawi and Dr. Doreen Benjamin, who discussed the negative effects of smoking on human health, society, and the economy.

Workshop Topics:

  • Health Hazards:
    The speakers highlighted the harmful effects of smoking on human health, including respiratory diseases, cardiovascular conditions, increased cancer risk, and its negative impact on the immune and nervous systems.
  • Social Impacts:
    The workshop addressed the social consequences of smoking, such as its effect on social relationships, rising addiction rates among youth, and its influence on families and society as a whole.
  • Economic Burden:
    The discussion covered the financial costs of smoking, both on individuals and the state, including medical expenses for treatments and medications, as well as its impact on productivity in the labor market.

The speakers also provided students with guidance on how to quit smoking, drawing on religious and ethical teachings that emphasize the importance of preserving health and avoiding harmful habits.

  • Enhancing awareness about the dangers of smoking through regular seminars and workshops.
  • Providing support programs for smoking cessation within the university campus.
  • Highlighting the religious and ethical aspects of rejecting smoking and promoting a healthy lifestyle.

At the end of the workshop, an interactive discussion took place between students and the speakers, during which many questions were raised about the best methods to quit smoking and the challenges faced by smokers in their journey to quit.

This workshop is part of the university’s ongoing efforts to raise awareness about harmful habits and promote a healthy environment for students and the community.
