In embodiment of its academic and national responsibility toward environmental and sustainability issues, the College of Administration and Economics at the University of Karbala organized a specialized training course titled:
“The Role of Higher Education Institutions in Greening the Economy.”
The course was held from Sunday, February 23, 2026, to Tuesday, February 25, 2026, and specifically targeted undergraduate students in the Department of Economics to enhance their understanding of the concept of the “green economy” and how to integrate environmental standards into future economic policies.
The training sessions were conducted and delivered by a group of specialized female lecturers from the college:
- Dr. Ibtehal Nahi Shaker
- Assistant Lecturer Nouf Ali
- Assistant Lecturer Huda Mahdi
The lectures presented a comprehensive vision of how educational institutions can transition from their traditional role to a leading role in promoting a culture of “greening” and preparing graduates capable of leading the transition toward an environmentally friendly economy.
The course included in-depth discussions on several strategic themes, most notably:
Greening the Economy Concept:
Introducing the scientific foundations of the green economy and its role in reducing emissions and achieving sustainable growth.
Curricula and Sustainability:
The role of academic departments—especially the Department of Economics—in updating curricula to include concepts of environmental economics and renewable energy.
Scientific Research and Green Innovation:
How university research can provide economic solutions to problems of pollution and climate change in Iraq.
Universities’ Social Responsibility:
The role of the university campus in implementing sustainability standards to serve as a model for the wider community.
The course aimed to instill environmental awareness among economics students, emphasizing that future jobs and global economic growth increasingly depend on green sectors. The sessions witnessed notable interaction from students, who presented critical perspectives on the current state of the Iraqi economy and possible ways to activate green strategies in government institutions and the private sector.
This activity comes as part of a series of scientific events regularly organized by the college administration to ensure that its educational outcomes align with international trends toward sustainable development, contributing to enhancing the standing of the University of Karbala in global academic rankings
