As part of its commitment to addressing contemporary economic and social issues, the Department of Economics at the College of Administration and Economics, University of Karbala, organized a specialized scientific workshop titled “Drugs and Their Economic and Social Impacts on Society”. The event saw participation from students, researchers, and faculty members.

The workshop addressed the issue of drugs as one of the serious negative phenomena threatening the fabric of societies. The lectures focused on the economic and social dimensions of the spread of this phenomenon and the significant losses it causes at both individual and state levels.
Economic Perspective:
The presenters highlighted the negative effects of drug use and trafficking on the national economy, including the depletion of human resources, exacerbation of unemployment rates, increased public spending on the health and security sectors, and adverse impacts on productivity and sustainable development.
Social Perspective:
The workshop examined the repercussions of the phenomenon on family and societal cohesion, leading to increased crime rates, domestic violence, and declines in education and public health indicators.
The workshop was marked by significant engagement from attendees, featuring extensive discussions and important questions regarding prevention methods and proposed solutions to mitigate this serious issue. The role of governmental institutions and civil society in combating it was also emphasized.
At the conclusion of the workshop, the Department of Economics expressed gratitude and appreciation to the esteemed presenters for their valuable efforts, underscoring the importance of continuing to organize such scientific events that address vital societal issues and contribute to raising awareness and knowledge among students.
